History

All communities, associations and clubs are initially born of the dreams, visions and the unselfish commitment of ordinary people. We at Trinity Boys Amateur Boxing Club were fortunate enough to have such dedicated people; in 1980 when men and women from our community came together to ensure that the young boys of our community had an alternative outlet for the energies. The current re-launched club owes much to our founder fathers, we believe that we have now put together a committee which will continue with their visions and will develop new ideas and strategies that will bring the Trinity Boys Amateur Boxing Club through to the next stage of its development. (Phase1). Back in the beginning the original club was trained by head Coach Liam ‘Ski’ Mullen during this time the Club played a pivotal role in the Community for many children. From humble beginnings the club progressed to have major success at all levels of Amateur Boxing at both regional and national levels and won the famous Anna Liffey trophy for best Dublin Club on numerous occasions. In 1998 Trinity Boys Amateur Boxing Club held official Olympic trials on behalf of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (I.A.B.A.). The club traveled annually to England for inter Club tournaments with Birmingham and Ladywood Boxing Clubs where today there is still friendship between all whom were involved. In 1996 unfortunately Trinity Boys Amateur Boxing Club lost the use of the training facility at The Donahies School, Streamville Road, Dublin 13 and with no premises for training the club was deactivated and its equipment was donated to help other clubs in the Dublin County area of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association.

However that was not to be the end for this famous Club after spending more than a decade in the wilderness and with a dedicated team made up of previous members of Trinity Boys Amateur Boxing Club and new upcoming community minded people we forged a new club out of our commitment, beliefs and ideas. We could no longer stand by see the serious lack of facilities in our Community impact on our children so once again with the courage of our convictions decided to take up the mantle and re-launch the club and find it a permanent home in the Dublin 13 area. After years of searching and strenuous negotiating finally in 2008 a license was obtained from the Trinity Sports and Leisure Complex Hole in the Wall Road to operate a amateur boxing club from a old disused squash court on the premises. When the Club was re launched is was imperative like all famous Boxing Gyms worldwide it would be given its own identity and the Gym was named Phase 1 the decision to give this name to the Gym was very simple as it would be the place were many young children would now come to learn the first Phase of Boxing in there careers.

The Club is now making great progress in rebuilding what once was, and again Liam ‘Ski’ Mullen is head Coach assisted by his former pupil now a qualified I.A.B.A. Coach Jason Bonney with former Club Secretary Willie Bonney along with Sean Cantwell and Senator Martin Brady undertaking the administered duties. In September 2008 Trinity Boys Amateur Boxing Club held its first Boxing Tournament since been re-affiliated to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (I.A.B.A.) the night was appropriately named ‘The Homecoming Tour’ and received overwhelming support from our Community this was also a memorable night for the original founder members of the Club as they were inducted as Honoree Members to the new Trinity Boys Amateur Boxing Club.
